Coastguard frustration after unlogged cruising boat incident

'Burning yacht incident'    .
More coast guard authorities - many of them volunteers - are frustrated by the lack of diligence of skippers when going to sea about safety issues. In Australia this week the volunteer marine rescue authority is again pleading with skippers of all yachts, large and small, to log their trips, after a yacht - it was a powerboat - exploded and sank off the Tweed River coast on the border between Queensland and New South Wales yesterday.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner about the destruction of the cruiser. According to reports, two passengers on the boat were using their jet skis when the incident occurred. The skipper then jumped overboard and was rescued by his jet skiing passengers after about five minutes in the water.

They were all then rescued by a passing charter boat.

However, Point Danger Tower spokesman, Bernie Gabriel, says he's disappointed by sailors who fail to log in with the coastguard agencies.

'If something does go wrong, it's much better if we know roughly where they are, in a reasonable area, than trying to look out over miles and miles of sea, trying to find where they finished up,' he told the media. 'Far too many, far too many fail to register, large boats and small boats.

'If we know where you are we can get to you quickly, if we don't know where you are, we can spend hours or even longer searching for you,' Gabriel said.
