As a cruising sailor one gets very used to being around dinghies and their outboard motors - for playing or for travelling, for transporting gear or for use as a diving board. But as familiar as they are, danger is always lurking for the unwary. This week a man's foot was sliced off after he fell in and got caught in the boat's propeller in a horrific incident on a river in Eynesbury, UK.
Magpas Helimedix, a volunteer medical service, were called to the incident, and gave critical care, controlling the bleeding using a tourniquet.
The man had been with some friends on their boat when he fell in the water in the late afternoon and caught his foot in the propeller.

The Magpas team worked with the emergency services to move the patient from the deck of the boat to the shore and then onto an ambulance. He was then transferred to a local hospital, where he was taken to an operating theatre for surgery. His condition is described as serious.
The patient’s wife also had a laceration to her forehead and was treated by the ambulance crew on the scene. Police, ambulance and fire crews worked together at the incident.
Dr Anne Booth, from Magpas, said: 'The pleasant day out for this man and his wife ended in tragedy for them in this awful incident. We are extremely grateful to the people of Cambridgeshire and beyond for supporting Magpas - The Emergency Medical Charity, enabling us to provide this man with the care that he would have received in the Emergency Department.
'As a result, we were able to prevent him losing more blood and we were able to relieve his pain. We wish both the patients a swift recovery'.
