Linda and Bill Anderson are a sailing couple who are living proof that it’s never too late to fulfill your dream.
After 30 years of fantasising about sailing around the world, they finally set sail on an action packed voyage that would take two years to complete and cover Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, Grenada, Colombia, Samoa, Fiji and Vanuatu. They crossed the equator four times.
Never mind that Linda suffered from sea sickness, was petrified of storms and had little sailing experience, or that the yacht that they would use for the voyage was home-built, this 30,000-nautical-mile voyage was about achieving their dream.
While they gained so much from their adventure, Bill and Linda also gave a lot back to the places they visited – working with street children, running art and play workshops with Linda’s photos and artwork filling the pages of this book.
It’s a story of battling gales and sailing through the world’s pirate hot spots; of exploring exotic and remote communities and integrating with the locals; and of experiencing the vastness of the great oceans and making new friends at each destination.
But above all, the story is one of overcoming a challenge of massive proportions and leaving a tiny part of themselves in every single one of the 30 countries Linda and Bill visited in their swift, yet tough yacht Valiam.
About the author: Linda Frylink Anderson is an early childhood teacher, university educator and artist.
She and her husband, Bill, have been married since November 26, 1977.
Together, they have two children, three grandchildren, one 13.7-metre plywood yacht, and a shared passion for traveling the world.
Their yacht Valiam’s name was not as a misspelled euphoria tablet, but formed by combining the names of their children Vashti and Liam. Linda and Bill live by the beach on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia with Valiam moored nearby.
Linda said recently she does not know what was harder – circumnavigating the globe in a yacht with her husband or writing a book on the epic voyage.
She added that the name of the book came from her love of wearing sarongs both on the sea and on dry land.
