New sailing app for iPhone: Come Sailing 1.0

'iPhone - another app for sailors, specially if you are bare boat chartering'    Mark Cherrington
Come Sailing 1.0, an app designed for sailboat owners and bareboat charterers, is now docked at the iPhone App Store. The Come Sailing app is a sailor's assistant providing nautical information, checklists, a hull speed calculator, and a sailing log book.

Avid sailors and cruisers, John and Patti Conrader, initially designed the app as a series of checklists to assist with the preparation stages necessary before embarking on bareboat sailing adventures. It wasn't long before they decided to expand the app to include a captain's log for recording details and memories while on sailing excursions.

'Having an electronic version of a sailing log is great because you can carry it with you. It's convenient because your stories and records go where you go rather than staying with the boat,' said John Conrader, President of NerdsGeeksGurus, LLC. In discussing the app, John was quick to point out that captain's log is non-restrictive allowing journal entries to be made that best suit the needs of the user. Popular uses for the log include recording marine data, weather information, maintenance info, or simply retelling the highlights of the day. As a handy bonus, the log can be emailed and exported as needed.

Come Sailing also has tools for landlubbers and sailors that need to sharpen their sailing skills. There is an interactive sailboat illustration that provides the appropriate boat part definition when a part is selected. There is also a hull speed calculator, a boat terms resource page and an interactive Points of Sail page. 'We added features for novice sailors because we occasionally have crew on board that have never been sailing before or that have limited sailing knowledge. Being able to provide novice sailors with basic sailing information helps them learn and gain a better understanding of sailing,' added Patti Conrader.

Given all of the other features the app offers, the Conraders maintain that the checklists provide the greatest benefit for them. Included is a pre-trip checklist that covers the tasks needed to be completed before setting sail such as arranging a charter boat, securing transportation, provisioning, and ensuring that emergency contact information is current. There is also a packing checklist for warm weather vacations.

Finally, there is John's favorite check list, the on-board checklist. The on-board checklist includes items on the boat that should be located and examined before leaving the harbor. It's intended to help sailors become familiar with the boat and to be able to locate key operating and safety items such as life jackets, seacocks, and the emergency tiller.

Regardless if the destination is the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, Thailand, the South Pacific, a Mediterranean Paradise, an island in the Caribbean inhabited by pirates, or a backyard lake, the Come Sailing app is a sailor's assistant that can be safely stowed on any iPhone, iPod touch or iPod and requires only 5.9 MB of space.
