Invaded by Sealions!

Do you have problems with seagulls nesting on your boat? Come back to find it covered in uncommercial quantities of phosphate? Think yourself lucky. Last week we reported a black bear invading the marinas on Vancouver Island, but how would you like to come back and find your boat like THIS?

Large sealions migrate along the Pacific coast from Baja California to British Columbia each year, and the numbers are increasing dramatically in Newport Harbour. No-one knows why they decided to make their summer home here, but city officials believe it may due to the large quantity of fish available locally, and the fact that Newport Harbour offers plenty of boats to sunbake on. They also suspect that a few residents are illegally feeding them.

Last month Sail-World Cruising reported that a 24ft star sailing boat was boarded by so many sealions that they eventually sank it. However, the problem is apparently still getting worse, with more and more sealions taking up residency in the Harbour.

The good news is that the migrating season ends in October. Good luck Newportians!
