Sail-World.com : Dozens of 'Green' Boats Sail for Barcelona

Dozens of 'Green' Boats Sail for Barcelona

'Converging on Barcelona'    .
In October 2008, several dozen boats will converge on the Spanish port of Barcelona in the name of marine conservation. Their destination is IUCN’s World Conservation Congress (5-14 October 2008).

Their message is one: we can and must protect our seas, oceans and coasts. The boats are not just ordinary sailing vessels. Each boat is living proof that something can be done to protect the extraordinary blue world that covers more than two thirds of our planet.

Here are just some of the boats coming to Barcelona:

Goletta Verde -  .. .
For the fifth consecutive year, Goletta Verde will sail around the Mediterranean as a 'spokesboat' for marine conservation. The two-master will represent the Italian NGO Legambiente, an IUCN Member, as its 'Green Schooner'. The objectives are to share information on the main environmental planetary urgencies, showcase best practices to safeguard biodiversity, and promote effective protected area management. The Goletta Verde will also support the establishment of the Mediterranean Parks Federation, an association of protected areas launched together with another IUCN Member, Federparchi.

Largyalo -  .. .
Largyalo is a unique catamaran made almost entirely of wood and whose design was inspired by the Polynesian tribal ships. It will be equipped with an unparalleled state-of-the-art energy concept, 100% self-sufficient and independent of fossil fuels, powered by sun, wind and water. Representing an innovative initiative, the Ark of Ideas, it will sail around the world to raise awareness on the effects of climate change and trigger actions in individual behavior.

The Jadran -  .. .
The beautiful three-master Jadran is a schoolboat belonging to the Montenegrin Navy, which will sail from the Balkans to Barcelona under the umbrella of the Dinaric Arc Initiative. This partnership of organizations works towards the long-term conservation of this region of south-eastern Europe, which boasts over 6000 km of coastline. In addition to celebrating its 75th anniversary, the Jadran will help bring attention to the need to protect some of the most pristine and stunning coastal and marine environments of the Mediterranean region.

Sailing to Barcelona is an action-oriented initiative linking the worlds of sailing and conservation. Its sole goal is to help advance the protection of coastal and marine biodiversity from the local to the global level. Never has the need to protect our oceans in a holistic and coordinated manner been so urgent. Sailing to Barcelona will give a voice to creative marine conservation efforts from various corners of the world, while helping to build new and innovative partnerships for future action, and raise awareness beyond the conservation community.

About IUCN
