Sail-World.com : India's first solo sailing circumnavigator on the home run
India's first solo sailing circumnavigator on the home run

'Tomy being farewelled by his naval colleagues before he left India'    .

There's almost nothing that can stop him now. Lt Commander Abilhash Tomy, Indian Navy, in his 56 foot Van de Stadt sloop Mhadei, has passed south of the Cape of Good Hope and entered his home ocean. So all the perilous southerly capes have been passed and the way home is clear.

It is the four great capes that mark a true circumnavigation, Tasmania's most southerly cape, Cape Horn, Cape Leeuin and the Cape of Good Hope. He now has a mere 5000 miles of his voyage to complete his circumnavigation at his start port in Mumbai, India.

His expected eta in Mumbai is 1st April and on arrival he will be the first Indian sailor to complete a solo non stop and unassisted circumnavigation of the world.

Three years ago, the same boat, Mhadei, which was built by Aquarius Fibreglas Ltd in Goa, India, was sailed solo around the world by Commander Dilip Donde, Indian Navy, with stops in Australia, the Falklands and Cape Town, thus becoming the first Indian solo circumnavigator.
