Sail-World.com : A Eureka moment for Harness and lifejacket design
A Eureka moment for Harness and lifejacket design

'The new TeamO design'    .

A new patented British design radically transforms harness design, promising a fundamental rethink of the way that harnesses work for the safety of the leisure sailor. The new product is called the TeamO lifejacket and harness. The Eureka moment came after a tragic loss of life by a British sailor after he had fallen overboard while still attached to his harness. He drowned before team mates were able to retrieve him from the sea.

The traditional design -  .. .

Noted solo sailor Oscar Mead, who completed the single-handed OSTAR race across the North Atlantic in fourth place after 22 days at sea when just 19 years old, has announced the formation of a new business, and the launch of the revolutionary new lifejacket and 'back-pull' harness design for the marine market.

When people first see the new TeamO lifejacket and harness, there is an immediate recognition that its unique design fundamentally changes the way harnesses work and that this product transforms what has been the accepted technology.

The new TeamO lifejacket and harness is a patented design, where the load is taken from the wearer’s back when in use, rather than from the front. Developed over the last year by Oscar Mead it’s a simple idea which radically changes the prospects for a man overboard.

All traditional harnesses, using an attachment point on a sailor’s chest, pull man overboard victims through the water chest forward, effectively forcing water into the mouth and face and this can literally drown sailors who go overboard, despite being tethered to the boat.

The new TeamO design allows the harness line to pop over the wearers shoulders when called into service so that the tether load is taken from the back and the man overboard is pulled through the water with his head securely above water and his mouth away from the oncoming water.

Simple enough in concept, a life saver in action.

As importantly, the new TeamO back pull harness has the added benefit of being an integral lifting strop for pulling the wearer back on board. Recovering a man overboard has been shown to be a major issue but by simply attaching a halyard directly to the A frame design, easily and quickly achieved even under pressure of an emergency situation, the victim can be winched back on board without delay.

Designed by Oscar Mead over the last 12 months the TeamO lifejacket and harness came about in a eureka moment over breakfast the morning after a tragedy in the English Channel in summer 2011. From there a long series of tests and product development, as well as patent applications, were necessary to get the design completed. The new product will be available for delivery in December 2012, ready for the 2013 season, but can be ordered now.

The new company says the new TeamO design is literally a life saver compared to every other harness design on the market, ensuring that in the worst case of a sailor going overboard their chances of drowning while attached to the tether are dramatically reduced and the unique design significantly eases the process of recovery on board as well.

Interest has already been received from distributors round the world.
