NS14 Australian Championship - NSW sailors score four wins in row

'NS14 Australian championship'    Rob Cruse

The NS14 Australian Championship has so far been dominated by New South Wales sailors Rohan Nosworthy and Sophie Holt, who recorded four consecutive wins over two days of intense sailing competition on the Tamar River at Beauty Point

Sailing a borrowed boat, they have outsailed the opposition in the 23 boat fleet from Tasmania, NSW, South Australia and the ACT, handing the varying breeze with great skill.

Conducted by the Port Dalrymple Yacht Club as part of its 60th season, race officers have managed to conduct all scheduled races so far, despite some tricky wind conditions on Saturday.

Day one (Saturday) saw shifty westerly winds, with more stable winds from the same direction on Sunday. The first race yesterday was sailed in 14 knots, the section in 9 knots.

NSW competitors are heading the scoreboard after four races, with Nosworthy and Holt on 4 points, followed by Bryce Edwards and Amanda Stern on 8 points from four seconds.

Third overall are Christian Calwell and Aaron Gardner on 22 points with a 3-7-4-8 score.

Best placed of the Tasmanians are sister and brother Katherine and Matthew Davis from Hobart who are in fourth place overall on 23 points, with placings so far of 7-8-5-3. Katherine is the current Australian junior and female champion skipper in the NS14 class.

Racing continues today and tomorrow, with a lay day on 1 January.
