First catamaran rally in Eastern Med - the first of many

'D cat club on its way - marina in background'    .

Catamaran rallies, like the popularity of the catamaran itself, are exploding around the world. In Didim, in the middle of the most popular cruising coastline of Turkey, the inaugural catamaran rally has been run by a marina with a speciality in catering for catamarans.

D cat club - D Marin in Didim -  .. .
D-Marin in Didim has formed the first ever catamaran club in the Eastern Mediterranean, and judging by the success of the first rally, it will not be the last.

The rally started on Friday 28 September at 10.00am and continued over four days of good weather, culminating in a lively award ceremony and party at Didim Marina Yacht Club on Monday 1 October.

There were just nine catamarans in the first fleet, which followed a breathtakingly beautiful scenic route, where the aim of the game was to have fun with the other participants and enjoy some good sailing.

Yachts left Didim marina for the Greek island of Patmos, 35nm away. They then embarked for Leros on Day Two, before heading to Kalimnos on Day Three and finally, the home stretch to Didim Marina, 28nm away from Kalimnos.

'It’s been great fun.' -  .. .
'It’s been great fun. With this rally catamaran owners could come together and have a nice time, which is one of the main aims of the club - to create a network with like-minded people who share a passion for cat sailing. Participants are already asking when the next one will be,' said Can Polat, marina manager at D-Marin Didim.

D-Marin Didim is known as a catamaran magnet owing to its unique technical infrastructure for catamarans as well as attractive sailing conditions. The winds are strong and regular, the marina itself is sheltered, and the Greek islands – most under 30 nautical miles away – mean there are varied cruising itineraries.

D-Cat club was launched in summer 2012 to give catamaran owners bespoke services and offer social and competitive events.

The catamarans entering the rally were: Dragonfly, Lady Sera, My Vision, Saya Princess, Yakataka, Sea Life, Derin, Kismet -Alim Sur and Pigeon.
