Canadians safe after grounding in the Galapagos

Sixteen Canadians and eight Ecuadorean crew members were rescued from a yacht that ran aground in the Galapagos Islands.
No injuries were reported in the Wednesday evening rescue by navy and national park vessels, which the 140-foot (46-metre) yacht's operator described as 'safe and orderly.'

In new interview with the Somali pirate gang who are holding kidnapped cruising sailors Paul and Rachel Chandler for ransom, spokesman Ali Gedow has told Britain's Daily Mail 'We don't care about mercy, we just want the money.' This came after hopes had been raised that the Chandlers would be freed 'within a fortnight'. He also confirmed that they had given Mrs Chandler a gun to protect herself.

Two lost in Mediterranean yacht tragedy

A Cypriot policeman died and the mother of two children is missing after a yacht capsized in rough seas off the coastal resort of Paphos on Cyprus. The yacht, with a Russian couple and two young children on board had sailed 150 miles from the Turkish port of Finike, a popular destination for yachts and a Sunsail charter base. The policeman had been making a rescue attempt.

The Concordia was laid on her side by a microburst which caused her to founder in only 15 seconds; she went from sailing to submerged in 30 minutes, rendering all of her onboard radio communications systems inoperable. But a GME AccuSat MT403FF EPIRB self-released, as designed, automatically activated, and triggered a rescue operation which saved all 64 crew.
