Triumph to tragedy, duffers to dreams...and the Cruising Masterclass!

The Margetts family, who have circumnavigated Australia  .
Craig Margetts is our featured profile of the week this week, another of the talented presenters who will be part of the Cruising Masterclass at the Sydney International Boat Show in the first days of August. If you don't already know EVERYTHING there is to know about cruising, if you're not completely updated on the latest information and technology, then this intensive seminar series is not to be missed. It comes free for attendees at the Boat Show, but you must register, as once the classroom is full, it will be too late to join!

Craig Margetts has Australian cruising experience which is probably unique. With thousands of miles on multihulls as well as monohulls, he will compare the two, advise on the issues when traveling with children on a cruising boat and, the factors to be considered in a circumnavigation of Australia.

The rest of our news this week is full of wild contrasts. We tell of triumph and tragedy, everything from dreams and hopes to the doings of duffers:

As the sailing world mourns the loss of seven American and British cruising sailors in the Tasman Sea while on their way from Opua to Newcastle, that same sailing world is celebrating the triumph of British sailor Jeanne Socrates, 70-year-old of indomitable will and superb seamanship skills who has just become the oldest female in the world to circumnavigate the planet, non-stop and unassisted. She arrived in Victoria in Canada this week and our story brings you the latest photos.

In triumph - Jeanne Socrates after her arrival into Victoria Harbour  .. .

Biggest duffers of the week go to a couple of Brits who should have started their career with sailing lessons instead of wasting the time of the RNLI. Fiji is becoming more and more of a dream sailing destination as Fiji makes big moves to cut red tape and improve facilities to make it easier for we cruising sailors. One dream dashed this week was the ambitious dream of circumnavigating the world in an 8ft boat. The French solo sailor had sailed from French Polynesia up the eastern coastline, but had to be rescued in Torres Strait – what a story!

In other news there cruising sailors from OceansWatch, led by New Zealander Chris Bone are off to help the South Pacific Islanders affected by ocean pollution and global warming.

Rally news for 2014 includes Mariner Boating's multihull program and the Island Cruising Association has announced some exciting new rallies to join from New Zealand through Australian waters and up to the Indonesian archipelago.

We also keep you up to date with the latest news about gizmos as well as skills you'll want to have. There are two new Apps for that latest 'must-have' on a boat, your iPhone.

It's all below, just by scrolling down the page.

Warm winter sailing!

Carry this sailing navigation super tool for safety!
John Jamieson,
In my mind, nothing beats simple and fast when it comes to plotting when cruising on a sailing boat. And it comes not from the marine world--but that of the aviation world.... [more]

Cruising boats from nine countries rally/race in Borneo
Borneo Times,
Even the organisers admit it's more a rally than a race, but they have modelled it after the Sydney to Hobart in that it sets off from a city(Miri) and goes to an island (Labuan), but that's as far as the comparison holds. Nevertheless, it is becoming an extremely popular event with short-handed cruising boats on long-range cruises.... [more]
