Sail-World New Zealand: March 7, 2013
 | | Emirates Team NZ flies down the back straight on the 2000/2003 America's Cup course in over 20kts of breeze - March 6, 2013 Sail-World.com NZL © | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for March 7, 2013
Luna Rossa and Emirates Team New Zealand, the two America's Cup Challengers, based in Auckland, enjoyed a great afternoon's sailing on the Waitemata, with plenty of high speed foiling in the fresh offshore breezes. In this edition of Sail-World.com's newsletter we feature two image galleries of the afternoon's racing in AC72's, along with four videos of the action.
For those who are not up with the technical nuances of AC72's, foiling and apparent wind sailing, the images give a good idea of what to expect in the America's Cup regatta later this year. And the trainspotters will have a field day.
The videos are best watch in high quality - we will have a shot at trying to improve the video quality later in the day.
In this edition, we also have the latest news and video from San Francisco to provide some balance to what is happening in New Zealand.

Also in this edition we feature an unofficial race schedule and format for the 34th America's Cup and Louis Vuitton Cup. With just three Challengers there has had to be some changes from the traditional format, and how the points will work through the Louis Vuitton Cup is explained. This guide is invaluable for anyone thinking of traveling to San Francisco for the America's Cup regattas - as you can calculate exactly how long you need to be there, rather than just go for the duration.
For TV fans, particularly yacht clubs wanting to have the Cup screening, this guide will also be invaluable. We stress this isn't official, but has been complied by Jack Griffin of www.cupexperience.com from a variety of sources, and is the best guide we have seen.

Staying with video, we feature the first of our videos shot using AEE Magicam technology. These mini video cameras (similar to the well known Go-Pro's) were positioned on several positions on the boat and give a good feel for the sailing action. We have not been able to see any difference in quality between the AEE Magicam and the popular Go-Pro, in fact if anything the nod in the quality stakes probably goes to the Magicam.
The Magicam really does score in its attachment systems, with a range of clamps available, plus even a pole. The attachment systems allow you to set up a boat very quickly and be confident of the cameras not being knocked off (although an attachment tie as a backup is highly recommended).
Where is Magicam really jumps ahead is in the price, being around half the price of similar products, and with very reasonable pricing for the attachments, which are screwed to the camera, as well as having the usual bolt arrangement.

Magicams can be obviously used for production of action video, such as has been done in the 18fter story in this edition. But where they really come into their own is in coaching and training. It is relatively simple to set these up in a boat - underneath the spreaders is an idea location, or at the back of the boat. After the training session you have the video to self-review your training session, or load it to Youtube and get some advice from a remote coach, who is working with you, and with the aid of the video, can probably put their finger on the issue that has been bugging your performance.
Emirates Team NZ use the mini-video camera technology extensively for design analysis and crew-work. With Magicam technology you can enjoy a similar platform, at a very reasonable price.
There's also a sister product which will turn your iPhone into an action video camera - for the iPhone 4 or iPhone 5, again both products are very reasonably priced.

The Etchells class have resumed regular Tuesday night racing in Auckland, with ten boats competing on Tuesday. In this edition we have another of Alex Webster's excellent reports. The class Nationals are being staged from 6-7 April. A ten boat minimum fleet is required, if you want to join the class that offers the best one design international keelboat racing, then check out the Etchells. Now if the time to start the beg, borrow, steal - if you don't already have a boat for the Nationals.
