Shackleton Epic and Pete Goss in the Southern Ocean
 | | Alexandra Shackleton drying out on the single sunny day . | Two sailing adventures are in the news this week, both in the Southern Ocean, both have reached the half way mark and both are hanging in there, in spite of turbulent times.
British sailing hero Pete Goss reports on his half-way finished circumnavigation of Tasmania in a sailing kayak with his mate Andy Warrender - read about their dramatic overboard experience. In another part of the Southern Ocean Australian adventurer Tim Jarvis and a British/Australian team are recreating Ernest Shackleton's amazing 800 nm sail in an open boat to South Georgia to rescue his stranded crew. They've had every possible weather but they're half way there and spirits are buoyant.
The international nature of the modern rescue is one of its significant features – the communication and cooperation between countries and authorities is very impressive these days. Read this week's prime example.
A wide variety of informative and useful news from all the world's oceans again this week. Articles on chartering in the Caribbean; the restoration of a heritage sailing gig; the dramatic arrest and conviction of two sailors on cocaine import; and a story on one sailing ship which is transporting cargo across the Atlantic without using fossil fuels. Finally, Captain Calamity is back – his 15th rescue has just occurred..

In practical news, read why you should NOT paint your hull red, but another bright colour; how to go about making the best medical kit for your boat; and John Jamieson offers some excellent advice on how to avoid the danger of your boat sinking through a faulty skin fitting.
