Welcome to Sail-World Canada
Looking forward to the Vendée Globe!

Christophe Launay © | Two Canadian university sailing programs joined 36 other schools for the 2012 Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta this past weekend; the event, hosted by the Storm Trysail Foundation, attracted over 400 college sailors to Long Island Sound Larchmont Yacht Club located just outside New York City. Sailors from Queens University and Ottawa U enjoyed the racing on-board big boats ranging from J/105's to Swan 42's.

Less than a month before the big day in Les Sables d'Olonne; Vendée Globe competitors are fine-tuning their equipment through various training sessions; check out Christophe Launay's images of Alex Thompson's ripping through the English Channel under full spinnaker on Hugo Boss. The yacht, a Farr Yacht Design Open 60 built in 2007 won the 2007 Route du Rhum and participated in the Last Vendée Globe before recently being updated with a new deck for Thompson.
We'll also see a handful of new yachts this year; keep an eye out for Bernard Stamm's Cheminées Poujoulat, an exciting Juan K design that finished third in the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race. A number of VPLP-Verdier designs will be on the start line next month; the most recent being François Gabart's MACIF, others include Virbac-Paprec, Banque Populaire and PRB, launched in 2010, while Groupe Bel and Safran date from 2007. One of the most interesting yacht this year is Javier Sansó ACCIONA, the first Open 60 using clean energy; the Owen Clark Design will rely exclusively on energy produced by the sun, the sea and the wind; the yacht is not carrying any fossil fuel.
Sail-World caught Emirates Team New Zealand AC72 in full flight recently; check out Richard Gladwell's images where she clearly gets up on her leeward foils at an estimated speed of 30 knots. Pretty impressive!

Following the recent release of the 2013-2016 Racing Rules of Sailing, ISAF announced the 2013-2016 Equipment Rules of Sailing earlier this week; both documents are now available as iPhone versions. Time to review the new rules ahead of January 1sy, 2013 when they become effective.
All the best!
