Earlier this week we asked some pointy questions about the AC45 fleet racing scoring system. We weren't alone in thinking that 40 points for a win in the last race of a series might be 'a bit much.' Since then both Bob Fisher and Paul Cayard have both made reference to the heavily weighted score, not necessarily approvingly.

A fair number of Sail-World Asia readers agreed with our Editorial, too, and there were no complaints. However, the quote we like best came from a blog published by one of the US newspapers, from a journo who scored a trip round the bay on one of the amped-up cats. The reason usually given for weighted end-of-series race scoring is that it helps define a winner, and it makes it easy for non-sailors to understand. The reporter wrote, 'Say what you will about the America's Cup - and we have, again and again - but this was a fairly breathtaking experience. As for who won the race, no one much cared about that (apparently, however, it was a good day for the home team).'

If that's the case - why bother with the 'Super Sunday' stuff? Use a sensible scoring system, make the sailing aficionados happy, and let everyone else just enjoy the spectacle (which is fabulous). Unless, of course, there is an ulterior motive behind it all...
