October has always been one of my favorite times to sail. Leaves are turning color, otherwise-crowded waters are thinned as boats go onto the hard for the winter (at least in northern climes), and the heat of summer has given way to cooler days. Sure, days are shorter but races are savored more as thoughts of frostbiting (or skiing) start to pepper the conscious mind.
On San Francisco Bay, the Melges 20 class enjoyed fine fall sailing conditions for their U.S. Nationals, which just took place at the Corinthian Yacht Club. After eight races, Michael Kiss' 'Bacio' took top honors, followed by John Kilroy's 'Samba Pa Ti' and Richard Davies 'Section'. Impressively, this victory marks Kiss' third consecutive Melges 20 Nationals win. Get the full scoop.

Also on San Francisco Bay, this issue is teeming with great coverage from the recent America's Cup World Series (ACWS) San Francisco event. Some of the world's best shooters were on hand to capture fantastic image galleries of AC45s flying hulls, burying bows and offering the hordes of assembled spectators a wild show involving both match racing and fleet races. Speaking of the Cup, Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) won a serious point with the international jury that—while small on the surface—will make a big difference on the water. At the core of the debate, which was decided by the International Jury, was whether the AC72 class rule requires boats to be measured with their daggerboards up or down. Richard Gladwell, Sail-World's New Zealand editor, has put together a great in-depth look at what this decision will mean for next year's Louis Vuitton Series, as ETNZ now looks to have the fastest foils afloat (at least for now). And in Hamilton, Bermuda, skipper Taylor Canfield (USVI) and his Team Chicago Match Race Center crew won the prestigious Argo Group Gold Cup by beating skipper Johnie Berntsson (SWE) and his Berntsson Sailing Team. Canfield won three straight bullets, earning his name on the King Edward VII Gold Cup Trophy and collecting a check for $50,000. 'This is the first time the four of us have sailed together as a team,' reported Canfield. 'I feel like my crew, Dan Morse, Josh McCaffrey and Mike Rehe, did such a great job that all I had to do was point the boat in the right direction. The finals just went really well for us and we just seemed to be picking the shifts.'
