 Not everybody is going to agree with Dr Ben Tan's assessment of Sailing's Education System. His advocacy of a 'tough love' programme intended to encourage self-sufficiency among Singapore sailors probably raises as many questions as it provides answers. One point we would like to raise, though, is this: Singapore sailor Colin Cheng, who scored 15th in the Laser class at Weymouth, took a year out from his University studies and funded his own coaching. Is this a demonstration of the efficacy of 'tough love', or does it show that grit, dedication and determination can prevail even in the absence of a fully-supporting programme? Did Cheng succeed because of the system, or in spite of it?
We'll leave you to draw your own conclusions, but it is definitely worth reading.
The AC45 fast action is ramping up over in San Francisco, and down in Australia the annual Hamilton Island (popularly known as 'Hammo Week') bash is under way.
And - just for the amusement value - if you haven't yet seen the Irish sailing commentary video, then you really are missing out! Generally reckoned to be the best commentary to come out of the Olympics, this was a definite hit with the hard-boiled seen-it-all-heard-it-all cynics in the Weymouth Media Centre. Inspired!
