If I could have had my pick of things to do this last week - anything at all - it wouldn't have been racing AC45s at Newport. No, I'd rather have been stomping down the Solent on a J-Class. (And by the way, for any RHKYC members who are interested, Jeroen de Vos of Dykstra Naval Architects, will be talking about J-Class yachts at the RHKYC tomorrow).
The Volvo Ocean Race has stormed to a close, and in the end it got quite interesting - after the marketing tour of Asia was dispensed with. Back in February, Telefonica looked unbeatable, but they didn't even make the podium in the end. And after all the breakages and unfinished legs, it is very fitting that the first two places went to boats - Groupama, Camper - that did actually go the distance.
Taiwan is limbering up to join the Asian International Boatshows Club, as if it wasn't saturated already. Just a pre-press event at the moment, but it will be interesting to see how this shapes up over the next 12 months.
As ever, watch this space.
