 Olympic windsurfing gathers international support!
Last week, I expressed my amazement following the ISAF decision to remove windsurfing from the 2016 Brazil Olympic games; sounds like I am not the only one taken aback as petitions in support of the sport are now surfacing around the world. CYA's Paddy Boyd expressed his disappointment for all young Canadian sailors who have been hard at work on the International Windsurfing scene. It will be a long wait until the November 2012 ISAF Windsurfing and Kiteboarding meeting when further recommendations on the sport are expected; hopefully sufficient time though for support campaigns to make an impact.
It's a been a long 17 days at sea for the Volvo Ocean race fleet battling light winds to Miami. Congratulations to hometown hero PUMA who managed to fend off Camper in the final days drag race. Next leg will take the yachts some 3600 miles across the Atlantic to Lisbon, Portugal; start is set for next Sunday. Team Sanya will rejoin the fleet for Leg 7.
Speaking of Charleston, the South Carolina community hosted the Atlantic Cup offshore leg yesterday where 15 Class 40 yachts crossed the start line on their way to New York City; this is the largest number of Class 40 yachts to ever race in North America. Many entries are here from Europe as the get ready for the upcoming Transat Québec St-Malo in mid-July, which will take them back to Europe. We just heard that equipment failure has caused the mast to come down on British entry 40 Degrees, details in the story.
Toronto's Diane Reid and One Girl's Ocean Challenge will be on the UK Mini Fastnet 6.50 race start line tomorrow in Plymouth. Diane is finally back in racing mode having missing out on recent events because of autopilot challenges and having to modify her boat to meet new Class rules. The course for event is different from the traditional RORC Fastnet race as it will take competitors past Bishop Rock to the Fastnet Rock than north-east along the Irish coast into St. Georges Channel before returning to Plymouth. Olympic hopefuls Luke Ramsay and Mike Leigh are in Lisbon this week for the 470 World Championships; this is a qualifying event for the Summer Olympics and we wish them all the best!
