The Mid Year meeting of the International Sailing Federation over the choice of classes for the new Olympic Events for 2016, plus the future place of Kiteboarding is about to get underway in Stresa, Italy.
We have been closely covering the development of the FX by Mackay Boats for past few months and round out this coverage with an extended sailing video - shot in winds of 25 knots, but with long unedited sequences.
Commentary is provided by John Clinton of Mackay Boats who has 30 years experience of rig and sail design, specialising in dinghy and skiff rigs.
This is the first solid explanation of how Fathead rigs work - as seen in most of the top racing classes, all the way up to the America's Cup keelboats in 2007.
The video, chosen from the correct angles - ahead, behind and abeam, shows the rig doing all the work while the crew concentrates on keeping the boat flat, or better in the case of the FX canted slightly to windward, windsurfer style, which is when she really flies.
In the Volvo Ocean Race, we have been quiet for the past few days as the fleet negotiate the Doldrums and predicting leaders and options for the fleet is a little difficult without being able to see the clouds which are the dominant factor in determining where the breeze lies, and the advantage is to be gained.
But the fleet is free of the Doldrums now, and Tradewind sailing has started. The prognosis Sail-World ran this morning using the latest positions and the routing function of Predictwind.com shows that Camper has a lead of about 50 minutes over Puma, based on the time taken to reach the next waypoint at Eleuthera Island Light - en route to the finish at Miami. Volvo Ocean race has a slightly different picture based on their system of calculating the race leader.

The key point is that there are some dramatic course options ahead of the lead group, and a lot at stake as Camper chase their first ocean leg win, Puma try to close the gap on third and maybe second place overall, and Telefonica try to retain and extend their overall race lead.

Yesterday, at Eden Park, New Zealand farewelled one of its favorite sons. Sir Fred Allen was a great All Black captain, coach and New Zealander in so many ways. He was also a 60year member of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. In this newsletter edition of Sail-World.com, we feature an adapted story in Fred's involvement with the Manly Sailing Club in its hour of need. While it is an inspiring story about Fred, this situation is replayed too often throughout the country as Councils and others try to pull down facilities and structures, without putting something better in its place.
The team talk that Fred gave the Rodney District Council on this occasion, would have been something to hear. We also feature one of the magnificent interviews that Peter Montgomery used to have with Fred Allen. PJ had a superb rapport with the rugby great and sailing fan, and this 20 minute interview on the occasion of Fred being knighted two year ago is a very memorable insight into this humble man who inspired so many, and typified the very best New Zealanders of his era.

Don't forget the return of Steinlager 2 this weekend, she will be off North Head around noon on Saturday, and docking at the Viaduct at 1.00pm. Then she and Lion New Zealand will be open to the public all day Sunday.
