It has been a very busy few days on the New Zealand sailing scene, with a three of key National Championships being concluded, the America's Cup World Series being sailed in Naples, plus Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race nearing its conclusion.
History has been made off Murray's Bay in the National Starling Championships, which have been won for the first time by a female sailor. Erica Dawson (17) won the regatta from a fleet stacked with talented young sailors, and is clearly one to be marked for the future. We have reports and image galleries from the Starling Nationals in this edition of Sail-World.

The Young 88 Nationals, for the largest one design keelboat fleet sailing in New Zealand, were staged over the weekend, with the winds being not altogether co-operative.
Sail-World was on the water for what proved to be the final race of the day on Sunday, before the pin was pulled on the racing. In this issue, we have reports from each day of racing, links to the results, images from both days, and video from the Saturday and Sunday of the regatta. Comprehensive coverage indeed, but it is not all our work - and many thanks to those who contributed.
Leonard Takahashi-Fry has won the Toyota National Optimist Championships for a second time, and we have a final day report in this issue.

The America's Cup World Series was concluded in Naples on Sunday night NZT. It was the first event for the 2012 year, and was received very well by the Italian fans. For the first time in four events we have seen a home crowd getting enthusiastic about their home team. While everyone is expecting to see more of the same for the next event in Venice, it remains to be seen what happens when this Euro/USA circuit returns to the USA.
The world's top international yachting journalist, Bob Fisher, reports for Sail-World from Naples, and gives his always incisive view of the action. Coach Rod Davis also reports on the Emirates Team NZ perspective.
In this edition we have Dean Barker's comments on the Naples regatta. He's critical of the format of the series, particularly with what happened in the last two days. Unfortunately we weren't able to access full replays of the regatta, except for the final day (yes, it is in one of the reports in this edition). So not too much weight should be placed on the points outcome of the racing, given that some races carry far more weighting than others.

What is important to look at the nuances of the racing, and see who dominates/gains in conditions where there are reasonably fair and straight winds. Certainly in this regard Emirates did far better then the end of series points table would suggest. They also won four out of seven races in the fleet racing, three other teams won a single race each. Maybe that tells a different story to the points table.
Dean Barker also makes some comment on the Match Racing aspects of the series.

Emirates Team NZ, sailing Camper is expected to finish Leg 5 of the Volvo Ocean Race, late tonight or early Wednesday morning NZT, bringing to an end the month long saga of their fifth leg. Despite the time taken, this being a points event, the choices Emirates Team NZ have made on the repair seem to have paid off, and the team should arrive in Itajai in good time, with the Inport Race being sailed on Saturday, and Leg 6 on Sunday, local time.
Meanwhile Abu Dhabi are yet to arrive on a ship, and will then face a very rapid rebuilding exercise to be ready for the InPort Race. Stay tuned to www.sail-world.com for the latest developments. Several of the skippers give their views on the structural issues debate that has dominated this leg.

And that is not to forget the Main Event of the weekend, which was the Marine Trades Challenge, featuring teams from 15 marine companies in and out of Auckland, plus three schools - all from out of Auckland. This annual event has that interesting juxtaposition of participation of the young teams of apprentices from the marine trades, but also introduces the friendly, but intense rivalry between the companies, which has been the hallmark of improvement in the New Zealand marine industry which leads the world.
In this edition we have images galleries from the racing and carnage that is an inevitable and vital part of the learning experience.

On America's Cup World Series Naples final day Emirates Team New Zealand's good record in the fleet racing championship came to naught. Going in to the start on 52 points with four wins from six races, the massive scoring of the final race (50 points for the win then 30, 20, 20, 15, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 – compared with 10 for the win during the week) skewed the final result....
