Volvo, RS:X Worlds and the latest sailing news from around the globe

Welcome to this edition of Sail-World.com's Europe newsletter.

The Volvo Ocean Race is proving to be a war of attrition with Abu Dhabi the latest casualty. Ian Walker's team has slowed to check the damage to the bow of their Volvo 70. Franck Cammas and his crew lead the fleet on Groupama 4. Telefonica are back in third, trailing Puma.

Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofia Mapfre is set to get underway on the 2nd April in Palma de Mallorca, we have news from the RC44 Cascais Cup, the Global Ocean Race leg 3 prize giving has taken place, while at sea the Clipper fleet is closing in on Oakland, California.

The RS:X Worlds concluded after the final two days were blown out. Julien Bontemps (FRA) took the Men's title and Lee Korzits (ISR) the Womens.

RS:X World Windsurfing Championships titles to Bontemps and Korzits

The RS:X World Windsurfing Championship 2012, held in Cadiz in Spain, ended today without any races on the final two days as heavy winds meant cancellations were required. With four race wins to his name Julien Bontemps (FRA) takes the Men's title whilst Lee Korzits (ISR) makes it back to back World Championship titles with another consistent display on the world stage.... RC44 Cascais Cup tests boats and teams

RC44 Cascais Cup - The forecasters had said the wind would ease, but instead torrential rain bought stronger winds which tested all 15 boats and teams. Sailing with their big masthead spinnakers in the first race of the day the wind increased to 28 knots, by the final run a number of the team's fell foul to some spectacular broaches.... [more]

Volvo Ocean Race: Telefonica to stop at Cape Horn for repair session
Volvo Ocean Race and Sail-World,
Team Telefónica will carry out repairs at Cape Horn without stopping on land instead of heading into Ushuaia in Argentina after refining their pit stop strategy for Leg 5. Skipper Iker Martínez said the team's technical chief Horacio Carabelli would meet them by boat at Maxwell Bay, a move that should save them a significant amount of time... [more]

Volvo Ocean Race Leg 5 – Groupama 4 first round Cape Horn

Volvo Ocean Race team Groupama 4 continue to lead the fleet on the twelfth day of racing in leg five, from Auckland to Itajai, and were the first team to round Cape Horn this Friday at 1255 UTC. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing pulled off a heroic repair operation in the depths of the Southern Ocean after discovering delamination in their hull. Skipper Ian Walker supervised an incredible five-hour job that saw 30 bolts screwed through the hull of Abu Dhabi's boat Azzam (which means 'determination' in Arabic) to prevent further damage.... A fourth yacht in the Volvo Ocean Race has significant issues in the Southern Ocean, and has had to make a significant course deviation, to effect repairs. America's Cup: San Francisco Board approves Cup Agreement

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors today approved by a majority of 11-0, the agreement to host the America's Cup in San Francisco September 7 to 22, 2013. The San Francisco agreement calls for teams to be based at Piers 30/32 and for the America's Cup Village – the public Race Headquarters – at Piers 27/29.
