Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 25 March 2012
More drama in theVolvo Ocean Race, as Camper has damage to a non-structural bulkhead.
We have been tracking this story for the last few hours and have compiled a series of videos and images which probably tell the story better than a mass of words.
What words can't describe is the horrendous conditions in the Southern Ocean - but the videos do an excellent job. Against that backdrop, you make your own assessment of what is going on. Might pay to pull your sea-boots on, if you are watching these videos in full screen mode - it is amazing footage, and full marks to the crews for shooting it, and getting the video off the boats. It sure ain't easy - and particularly so when you realise that they are in the remotest part of the ocean.
Camper told us this morning that they were not considering a stop in South America, at this stage, but they have buttoned off a lot in the speed department, and are heading further north than the other competitors. Whether this is to provide a better course, avoid a weather system, or is a prelude to a quick stop/supply drop, is not known at this stage.

Latest reports from volvooceanracing.com has all the boats throttled back with winds of 40kts gusting 60kts. Telefonica's Iker Martinez says they could be sailing much faster. 'The boat could sail at 30 knots the whole way. But I don't think it would last more than ten minutes without falling apart like that, so we're going at 18-20 knots.'
On Friday morning, came the news that Team Sanya, which had all Volvo OR fans on the edge of their seats, with their leading of the fleet through the Southern Ocean, relayed the news back that they had smashed their starboard rudder and were returning to New Zealand. In Spain, the ISAF conducted trials to select the Women's Olympic Skiff and Multihull have pretty well concluded. We don't have any feedback on the multihull. But the news from the skiff is that the FX from Mackay Boats has done exceptionally well in the racing between all the boats. We have the official reports in this edition, which are very politically correct. As soon as we get more information it will be published.
The Two Handed Round New Zealand Race is over - with three boats listed as having finished. We don't have a final report yet.
On the America's Cup scene, the organisation shrink that was expected has taken place - as the organisation trims its expenses to meet anticipated revenues and slows the rate of cash-burn. We have the official release in this edition. We're not sure whether there are more developments to come - but stay tuned to www.sail-world.com

Closer to home, the BMW Auckland Cup is underway, with a good fleet enjoying a variety of conditions. As we write, they should be getting a bit of a kicking in the 25-35kts SW winds, but the racing will no doubt be a blast. We have reports and images from Ivor Wilkins in this edition and will have the final report on www.sail-world.com as soon as it comes to hand.
