 We have been very disappointed with the media coverage provided by the organisers of the 15th Asian Sailing Championships that took place in Langkawi recently. In fact, as far as we can tell, there wasn't any. We received no press releases, there are no news stories on the event website, and there is no photo gallery from which media can download images. Which means that to all intents and purposes, the event was completely invisible - and if it is invisible, it may not have happened at all. Trees falling in the forest, and all that.
In fact, it involved more than 270 competitors from 19 nations, racing in Lasers, 29ers, 420s, 470s, Hobie 16s, windsurfers and Optimists. A veritable sail-fest, but one that has gone largely unnoticed by many. What a shame for the competitors, and what a shame for the sponsors, too.
When you do find the website (http://sites.google.com/site/kedahsail/home/asian-sailing-championship-2012) it is practically unintelligible. There's no entry list, no class/division list, no race reports, no photos. Just a list of pdfs containing spreadsheets of results. So, well done the Malaysian Sailing Association, the Kedah Sailing Association and the Asian Sailing Federation for putting on what (apparently) was a great small-boats regatta – but, sorry, no marks at all for telling anyone about it.
Organisers of major events should take a look at websites that really work for the event, like the Phuket King's Cup (www.kingscup.com) or even the Volvo Ocean Race (www.volvooceanrace.com). You wouldn't want your Club's flagship event or World Championship to disappear into the electronic mist without a trace, would you, now? And nor would your sponsors...

Or even (gasp) unsubscribe.
