 Three in a row for Team Telefonica!
Team Telefonica opted for a more northerly route to Sanya after exiting the Malacca Strait earlier this week; as a result, they found themselves crossing the finish line ahead of the fleet in the chinese port to win their third leg in a row. Sir Peter Blake was the last skipper to accomplish such a feat back in 1989 when the prestigious event was still called the Whitbread Round the World Race. With the lead chaining on a daily basis over the past week, this is a disappointing outcome for the others who came so close; less than five hours separating the top four yachts at the finish.
Two yachts have turned back to Auckland in the southern ocean; the fleet of five Class 40 yachts crossed the start line in Wellignton, NZ last week-end for the challenging Global Ocean Race Leg 3 towards Punta del Este in Uruguay. Earlier this week, Ross and Campbell Field, who were leading the fleet on Buckley Systems, and Halvard Mabire and Miranda Merron who were trailing then by 20 miles on Campagne de France have turned back because of injuries and gear damage. Cessna Citation is now leading the way towards Cape Horn.
For those who can't wait until August for the next America's Cup World Series event in San Francisco, you can get your fill of close quarters multihull racing excitement later this month; the first race in the 2012 Extreme Sailing Series is scheduled for February 28th in beautiful Muscat, Oman. The Extreme 40 fleet is sure to provide lots of excitement again this year!
