With the Volvo fleet now in the South China Sea, people really are looking at Asia. We were very amused by the words of Euan Ross, writing to our (polite nod) competition Scuttlebutt: "As a former long-term resident of South East Asia, I still receive my daily Asian yachting news through the e-mail. The contrast between the various hysterical accounts of the Volvo fleet's tortuous, nightmare voyage and the blasé race reports of the local offshore fleet, enjoying their sport routinely and without hyperbole in the same waters, couldn't be greater".
The Singapore Straits has just been and gone (last weekend), The Bay Regatta (Thailand) has just started, and this coming weekend Sail-World Asia will be joining the Neptune Regatta (www.neptune-regatta.com)as it heads south through the Selat Riau towards the equator. We can't promise to be blasé, and have even been known to indulge in a little hyperbole after a few Mount Guy Rums... but we absolutely promise that we will be be enjoying our sport!
It's easy to rely too much on your GPS - there are some sailors in New Zealand who did when it came to the crunch. Take heed. Of course, if Lightsquared goes ahead and messes up the GPS signals, we'll all be in the soup. Or on the rocks.
