The Toronto International Boat Show is finally here; for many of us, it's an opportunity to gather around sailboats and talk boating in the midst of the Canadian winter. The Sail Fest area has adopted a new look this year; the entire sailboat viewing area will share a common 'upper deck' adjacent to the Canadian Yachting Island Village; I hope to see you there! The International Association for Disabled Sailing IFDS Worlds are being disputed in Charlotte Harbor, Florida as I write this newsletter. The event is an annual world championship regatta for Paralympic class boats such as the 2.4mR, the Skud 18 and the Sonar. After eight races, Canadian Paul Tingley is in third place in the 2.4mR class.
Quite appropriately, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, led by Ian Walker, scored a perfect victory in today's in port race in Abu Dhabi. This is their second in-port race top result following their win in the original race in Allicante, Spain. Tomorrow sees the start of the next leg in the Volvo Ocean race as the fleet gets ready for their next destination in Sanya, China; as was the case for Leg 2, this leg will be broken into two parts to avoid the threats of piracy.
The Clipper Round the World Race is still progressing as the fleet sails into the Celebes Sea just South of the Philippines on their way to Singapore; on day 20 of race & since leaving the Australian East Coast, the fleet has encountered a variety of conditions and seen a number of lead changes.
The racing season has begun in North Amrica with the annual Fort Lauderdale to Key West event already under way, leading up to Key West Race Week starting on Sunday. We'll be keeping an eye on a handful of Canadian entries in one-design (Farr 30 and Melges 24), PHRF and Grand Prix, which will be of particular interest with the racing start of Carbonado, Ron and Sandy Butler's new MacConaghy 38 from Ontario.
