Welcome to Sail-World Canada
Will the Jules Verne record be broken?
With only a few yachts still out at sea, the 2012 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race is soon to be just a memory, but what a race it was! With only minutes separating line honours yachts in the Tasmanian capital, it remains one of the most exciting offshore events to watch. Anthony Bell's Investec Loyal was first to cross the finish line following a gybing duel with Wild Oats XI up the Derwent River; navigator extraordinaire Stan Honey made all the right calls, while Canadian crew Nick Beaudoin savoured the victory. The recipient of the coveted Tattersall's Cup, awarded to the IRC handicap winner, was announced just a few hours ago; Stephen's Ainsworth and his crew on LOKI, the 63 foot Reichel Pugh, were presented with the trophy in Hobart.
In Wellington, New Zealand, Conrad Colman and Sam Goodchild, the youngest team in the Global Ocean Race, helmed their Akilaria RC2 Class40 yacht, Cessna Citation, across the finish line to win leg two of the race. The last few weeks have been extremely challenging for the entire fleet and the finish was no different with winds of 40 to 50 knots blowing through Cook Strait as the leaders finished.
Earlier this week, the Volvo Ocean Race fleet was lifted onto a ship that will transport them to the United Arab Emirates where they will be unloaded for the leg to restart to Abu Dhabi. Team Sanya is currently in Madagascar where they suspend racing earlier in the leg following rig problems.
Banque Populaire V is back in the Northern hemisphere after Peyron and his team set a new record crossing the equator in just over 38 days; sailing at 35 knots, they currently enjoy a 1400 mile lead on the previous Jules Verne record.
Remember the blue, very blue water, the sun that's so warm it touches your soul, and the irresistible happy faces that make you smile? It is the Caribbean! Feel the magic again at the upcoming Toronto International Boat Show. At Canadian Yachting's Island Village, located in the SailFest section (Hall D) of this year's show, enjoy the authentic island sounds and tastes of the Caribbean, while island country representatives and charter boat companies help design your next vacation! Sail-World Canada will see you there from January 14th to 22nd at the Direct Energy Centre.
Boating enthusiasts on the West Coast can mark their calendar for the Vancouver International Boat Show set for February 8th to 12th, while Atlantic provinces sailors will have to wait until February 23rd to 26th for the Halifax International Boat Show. More details in the weeks to come.
Best wishes for the New Year!
