Marina Survey results, Camper paper pavilion, 42,000 year old fishing

As we count down to Christmas (yes, only 3 weeks and 4 days!) and no doubt, heady days spent on the water, spare a thought for the Volvo Ocean Race crews braving all kinds of conditions, including windless, during the first leg between Alicante Spain and Cape Town where the first two boats arrived just a few days ago.

Camper with Emirates Team New Zealand, skippered by Australian Chris Nichyolson, crossed the finish line in Cape Town 16 hours behind Spanish entry, Telefonica, who completed the leg on Saturday after 21 days, five hours and 14 minutes at sea since leaving Spain.

The second leg from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi starts on December 10 and the race finishes in Galway, Ireland, next July. If you want to spend a few fascinating hours contemplating the routes and checking out the boats, visit www.volvooceanrace.com for all the intriguing details of this challenging race. Of course, our colleagues at Sail-World.com will be relaying all the action and strategy over the next 7 months.

Sticking with VOR, we have a first peek at the Camper Pavilion - a soon to be familiar sight at the ports of call of the Volvo Ocean Race - made of cardboard by the inspirating architect, Shigeru Ban.

In industry news - we have the facts and stats from METS, a preview of the Hainan Rendez-Vous in April 2012, a plethora of new products in time for summer and the results of the annual Health of the Australian Marina Survey which show environmental issues and commitments are strongly supported by financial investment.

And for a spot of fascinating anthropology, Australian scientists have found 42,000 year old fish hooks that prove the sport is one of the oldest forms of hunting. Hope you get a chance to plunge a line in over the next few weeks.

Plenty more to come over the rest of the week, so pop by.
