Welcome to Sail-World Canada
ACWS in San Diego!
The America's Cup World Series have landed in San Diego, CA this week; the action is now heating up from earlier in the week when lighter conditions prevailed for some of the qualifying races. Saturday will see the winner of the Match Racing Championship decided in the final three race duel, while Sunday will should be exciting with the Speed Trial runs and the Fleet Race. All the action is available live on Sail-World.com; we also have video replays and amazing photos. San Diego is an incredible venue for this racing format!
Quite the year for Jean-Pierre Dick and Jeremie Beyou who were the first across IMOCA entry across the finish line in the Transat Jacque Vabre on boats Paprec-Virbac 3; Dick won the Barcelone World Race earlier this year, while Beyou was first in the Solitaire du Figaro. While the French know a thing or two about offshore racing, British racer Alex Thompson, on Hugo Boss, is set to arrive in Costa Rica in second place with Spaniard Guillermo Altadill. After 16 days of racing, the remainder of the Open 60 fleet still have a few hunder miles to go, closely followed by the two Multi 50, while Aquarelle.com, the closest Class 40 yacht, is still 1300 miles away.
While the entire fleet pushed as hard as they could to score additional points through the Clipper Round the World Ocean Sprint, Singapore has retired from the race following the steering problems they encountered last week. The 70-foot yachts regularly posted speeds over 20 knots surfing waves in the Souther Ocean. The top five boat are only within 40 miles of each other and it's still anyone's race to win as the leader keeps changing now that they are heading north along the New Zealand eastern shore.
Another duel at the front of the fleet is taking place in the Atlantic Ocean where Team Telefonica has just edged Puma Mar Mostro for the lead in the Volvo Ocean Race. Following the required celebrations while crossing the Equator, teams set their sight on the Fernado de Noronha Island, where they could start their big left hand turn through the Southern Atlantic. Navigators will have to find the best way around the St. Helena high pressure system and might be forced to put in more miles in order to keep the speedo up; this race is not over yet with Groupama slowly closing the gap at the back.
Sail-World is attending the METS trade show in Amsterdam where David Schmidt shares pictures of cool new toys.
All the best!
