Hugo Boss leads - All the latest sailing news from around the globe

Welcome to this edition of Sail-World.com's UK newsletter.

IMOCA 60 skippers Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss) and Jean Pierre Dick (Virbac Paprec 3) are battling for the Transat Jacques Vabre lead with just three miles between them. The rest of the fleet are back and fighting for breeze, as the leaders extend their advantage.

Eleven year old Ben Jelf of Maidstone, Kent becoming Britain's youngest World Powerboat Speed Record holder at the 41st annual Coniston Powerboat Records Week, whilst managing to raise over £2000 for the Everyman Cancer Campaign at the same time. Well done Ben.

Locally we have news from the Charity event held at Blithfield SC, from the 29ers at Grafham Water SC, National 12 Gill Series, the GP14s - lots more from around the country.

Internationally the Volvo Ocean Race is now in full swing and Franck Cammas and his crew onboard Groupama 4 lead the fleet. A dramatic week saw the retirement of Team Sanya and urgent repairs to Abu Dhabi after her dismasting.

In other news Sail Melbourne, the first leg of the ISAF Sailing World Cup is underway in Melbourne, Australia. It has been a testing time for all the sailors, with conditions variable (from light breeze to gales). Bryony Shaw leads the Women's RS:X fleet, with Izzy Hamilton and Claudia Carney placed seventh and eighth. ALexandra Rickham and Niki
Birrell lead the Skud fleet.

The Clipper Round the World Yachts are on their way from Geraldton, Western Australia to Tauranga in New Zealand, a distance of 3,800 miles. At last report Gold Coast Australia led Visit Finland and Derry-Londonderry.

Charity event at Blithfield SC

A fleet of thirty-eight turned out to enjoy pristine sailing at Blithfield SC to raise money for the League of Friends Garden Suite Chemotherapy Centre based in Redditch. A Saturday night party resulted in over £1000 being raised, which was evident by the number of sore heads and comatose sailors the following morning.... [more]

National 12 Gill Series at Leigh and Lowton SC

The twenty-two strong fleet of National 12s were greeted by light winds upon their arrival at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club for the Gill Series Finale and the Inland Championships that took place on the 5th November. Britain's youngest World Powerboat Speed Record holder

This year, eleven year old Ben Jelf of Maidstone, Kent was declared Britain's youngest ever World and European Powerboat Racing Champion and just this past week (3st1 October – 4th November), Ben went a step further by also becoming Britain's youngest World Powerboat Speed Record holder at the 41st annual Coniston Powerboat Records Week held in Cumbria.... RHKYC Dragon Class Championships 2011
RHKYC Dragon Class,
The annual Hong Kong Dragon Championship took place over last weekend 5-6 November off Lamma Island where the competitors enjoyed near-perfect wind conditions with 10-12 knots NE wind on Saturday increasing to 12-16 knots on Sunday.
