 Akena Vérandas dismasted in the TJV!
We mentioned last week that the Transat Jacques Vabre fleet was set to encounter rather challenging conditions shortly following the start from Northern France; well the start was eventually postponed from Saturday to Wednesday in order to buy them some reprieve and let the storm pass through. Despite this schedule change, the fleet was still racing in big swells and 30 knots for the first day out; the conditions have taken their toll on the Open 60 Akenas Vérandas with a broken mast earlier this morning. Arnaud Boissières reported that neither himself or co-skipper Gérald Veniard were uninjured in the incident. Escofier and Koch on Crêpes Whaou are leading the way in the Multi 50 class, while the IMOCA yachts are engaged in a drag race where it is too early to identify a leader. A bit further back, Aquarelle.com is trying is maintain their lead against an aggressive Class 40 fleet.
Challenging conditions, this time in the western Mediterranean, are awaiting the six yachts engaged in the Volvo Ocean Race; their start is set for tomorrow morning and as
Ken Read, skipper of Puma Ocean Racing put it: 'It looks like we could get the crap kicked out of us getting out of the Med.' The race start will be available live on the official website and should be more interesting than the light air in-port race last week-end; these are all out offshore machines after all and racing on a shortened in-port course must have been painful for most of them. Team Abu Dhabi and Ian Walker probably didn't mind though, scoring a decisive first place finish and adding previous points to their scoresheet. The battle for the last podium place in the Global Ocean Race first leg from Mallorca, Spain to Cape Town, South Africa is on! After 40 days at sea, only 40 miles separates Marco Nannini and Paul Peggs on Financial Crisis from Conrad Colman and Hugo Ramon on Cessna Citation. The father and son team of Ross and Campbell Field on BSL, crossed the finish line 14 hours ahead of Halvard Mabire and Miranda Merron on Campagne de France a week ago to capture first and second place respectively.
Exciting news in America's Cup 34 circles with the announcement earlier this week that long time Cup favourite Prada/Luna Rossa is back! The team will be collaborating with Emirates Team New Zealnd and should take delivery of their AC 45 in December. Next stop on the America's Cup World Series is San Diego, November 12 to 20, with racing starting on Wednesday the 16th with three fleet races on the menu, followed by Speed Trial Runs in beautiful Sand Diego natural amphitheatre harbor.
