 Looking ahead to the battles in Perth
The largest ever Olympic class sailing event to be run in Australia is coming up fast. Its Perth 2011 and 75% of all the Olympic 2012 places are up from grabs.
The Sail-World Team will be covering the event in detail. Today we bring you the first of a dozen or so feature stories on the classes and the players.

Today we focus on Nathan Outteridge and Iain 'Goobs' Jensen, as they start think about 20-25 knot winds and a choppy seastate, trying to qualify Australia and secure their own places in the Australian Olympic squad.

The new PUMA Ocean Racing Volvo Open 70 "il mostro" goes training in the waters off Newport, Rhode Island. Il Mostro's deisgn is painted to resemble, and is also named after, a brand of PUMA training shoe.

Some deals are just too good to pass up, especially if you have the wherewithal to do the deal right. Case in point: il mostro, Puma Ocean Racing 2008/2009-generation Volvo Open 70 is currently up for auction. Opening bids, which started at a modest 800,000 euros, were accepted on September 30, with the gravel barking its final cry on October 30. il mostro, it will be remembered, was designed by Botin/Carkeek and sailed by Ken Read and company to a proud second-place finish in the world's toughest offshore challenge.
Since winding down her first 'lap', il mostro has been actively maintained and updated. Read and his team used il mostro through the summer of 2010 (their Juan K-designed mar mostro was launched this past spring), both to train offshore and to race; she carries an IRC rating, and she placed second in the 2010 Newport-Bermuda Race under the ORR. 'We have been amazed to see that the Volvo 70 can compete in IRC better than anyone ever imagined!' said Read. For those following the terrible storm that ravaged this year's Chicago-Mackinac Race fleet and cost two sailors—Mark Morley and Suzanne Bickel—their lives, Chicago-based journalist Dawn Reiss has prepared an in-depth report that details what took place that night aboard WingNuts, Morley's Kiwi 35 sportboat. The report, reprinted in this issue, weaves-in all the facts that have surfaced since that fateful July night, including the recent sheriff's report. The independent US SAILING investigation is due out by the end of this month, so stay tuned.

And in racing circles, Alinghi took first place at Act 8 of the 2011 Extreme Sailing Series, the Global Ocean Fleet is struggling to get south of the equator, and—much farther south still—the Clipper Around The World Race fleet is preparing for a proper Southern Ocean thrashing, compliments of a stalking low-pressure system.
