 The Volvo Ocean Race is finally here!
Six teams are ready in Alicante, Spain for the in-port race tomorrow; the start gun will go off at 12:00 GMT/UTC and all the action will be available on-line via the volvooceanrace.com website. Many months of preparation are finally coming together, while the boats and the teams are particularly well prepared to face the challenging offshore conditions they will encounter over the next eight months racing around the world; no one can afford to ignore precious points that will be on the line. Next week will also mark the Classics race, ahead of the offshore start next Saturday.
The Sail-World team will be providing extensive reports from the Volvo Ocean Race; Richard Gladwell, supported by local editors around the globe and the clock, will be heading up our coverage, complete with dedicated weekly newsletters. Each VOR team has a media crew member whose sole purpose on the yacht is to share images and footage from the action on board. Sail-World will also run its own weather forecasting system to provide us much insight on the navigation strategies selected on the water.
In Cape Town, BSL was the first Class 40 yacht to cross the finish line on Leg 1 of the Global Ocean Race; after a short outing in the Fastnet, this GOR leg one from Spain to South Africa was the first significant Class 40 offshore experience for the New Zealand father and son duo. Ross and Campbell Field came in less than a 100 miles ahead of Halvard Mabire and Miranda Merron on Campagne de France who had lead the way for most of the race.
David Raison on his TeamWork Evolution continues to increase his lead and is expected in Brazil sometime this week-end to conclude the 2011 La Charente Maritime Bahia Transat 6.50 event. Somewhat further behind the leader, the fleet has spread out and many still aim at at podium finish.
More offshore racing in the Atlantic Ocean lies ahead, with the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre set for Sunday afternoon in Le Havre, off the French coast in the English Channel. Racing promises to become interesting with deteriorating conditions early on and all co-skippers are keeping an eye on a massive depression moving east from Newfoundland. This low pressure system is expected to meet the fleet as they consider their southerly options in the North Atlantic early next week. This event, raced double-handed, is open to IMOCA (Open 60), Class 40 monohull and Multi 50 multihull yachts; the 2011 race includes many familiar international names such as Le Cleac'h, Stamm, Golding, Thomson, Riou, Dick, Escofier and Lemonchois. With challenging conditions on the menu early on and experienced offshore racers at the helm of powerful yachts; the racing promises to be exciting!
