Melges 32 Worlds Kick Off—Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond

The 2011 Melges 32 Worlds kicked off in fine style in Palma de Mallorca this week with two tight races taking place on day one, leaving plenty more starting guns to sound before the new king of this hyper-competitive class is crowned. While the leaderboard is still very much up for grabs, John Kilroy and his Samba Pa Ti crew are currently sitting in first place after Day 2. Racing is scheduled to continue at the Real Club Nautico de Palma through the 24th. Be sure to check out lensman Max Ranchi's image gallery from day one's racing.

If classic lines are your thing, be sure to check out photographer Joaquim Santos's image gallery from the 2011 8 Metre Worlds, which took place last weekend at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto. And while no one likes to rubberneck at an accident or a misfortune, Santos also did a particularly bang-up job of capturing the last seconds of Norseman's old mast before it gave up the ghost, just above the forestay fitting.

And in Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) circles, Team Telefonica has arrived in Alicante, Spain, where this classic ocean race kicks off in late October. 'This is a big moment for us,' said Telefónica's Spanish skipper Iker Martínez. 'Our training time is finished and we now need to just do the final preparations for the race.'

To date, the team has ticked more than 9,000 miles on their now-generation Volvo Open 70. Interestingly they are the first team in this year's edition to arrive at the starting gate. 'We're feeling great but we know that the other teams will be good too and unless we're at 100 percent it will be impossible to beat them,' said Martínez. 'In order to be fighting at the end of the race you have to be in great shape at the beginning and I feel we are.'
