The three podium positions for the second leg of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race are now confirmed following the arrival today, after 20 days at sea, of Welcome to Yorkshire and Singapore in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They finished second and third respectively behind Gold Coast Australia who crossed the finish early yesterday morning. New York and Visit Finland, are expected to arrive tomorrow while the remainder of the fleet is facing strong headwinds on their way to Rio.
The Spanish crew of Bribon showed determination and consistency on the challenging home course in Cartagena to win the 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit's fourth regatta of the season. This was their first trophy regatta wind since winning the Cartagena event back in 2008; Canadian Olympic medalist Ross McDonald was on-board to guide them to victory. Well done! Bribon now stands in fourth position overall behind Quantum Racing (USA), Audi Azurra (ITA) and Container (GER) going into Barcelona for the final event event of the season in mid-September. Final results for the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac are now posted following a lengthy review of many request for redress for yachts that provided assistance to other vessels during the memorable storm of 2011 in which two sailors lost their life. Greg Freemen, event chair, provides some insight into the complexity of the scoring process this year.
Hurricane Irene was not very kind to many sailors and racers this past week-end; the US Sailing's Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship at the Rochester Yacht Club in Rochester had to cancel their Sunday practice race because of unusually high winds and waves on Lake Ontario; they then had to cancel racing on Day 1 Monday because of lack of breeze. After 11 races over the past few days, Sally Barkow from Wisconsin, came from behind to clinch the Championship for her fourth US SAILING Rolex IWKC title. Cory Serti from Rochester, NY finished second followed by Florida's Anna Turncliffe in third. Canadians Sharon Ferris from Toronto, ON and Katie Coleman Nicoll from Etobicoke, ON place very respectable 13th and 15th overall in a strong fleet of 36 entries.
Hamilton Yacht Club was quite busy this past week hosting the 21st Mobility Cup featuring 60 disabled athletes from five countries including Australia, the Netherlands, the U.K., U.S.A and Canada and the 2.4 MR North American championships. Congratulations to Allan Leibel from the National Yacht Club in Toronto, who won seven of 11 races over two days to win the Championships. We have full reports and photos from both events.
On the East coast, the 2011 Canadian Optimist Championships were hosted in Lunenberg, Nova Sccotia last week-end where close to 100 kids enjoyed an opportunity to race at the national level.
The Canada Cup is back in the news! Macatawa Bay Yacht Club's team Heritage beat the Chicago Match Racing Center's Convexity to win the Canada's Cup US defender trials this past week-end. The Championship, originally scheduled to start today, was delayed despite the race Committee's best effort to start a race in light conditions; its back on tomorrow morning when MBYC team Heritage will face off against Royal Canadian Yacht Club's Vincere.
