A large swathe of the USA's east coast is not the place to be this weekend for sailors, as Hurricane Irene barrels past the Bahamas and heads for the mainland. All boaters have been advised to make urgent provision for the safety of their vessels, and there have been some evacuations.
O to be in the Med, where the seas are reasonably calm, the sun is shining and the wind is fresh.
Boat Insurance: Talking of potential yacht disasters, BoatUS has five hard questions for you to ask your marine insurance agent this week, no matter where your boat is domiciled,. If your insurance policy is not due for renewal, print them out and keep them handy. If they can answer all these questions positively, you'll know you have a good company.
Pirates punished: One can only hope that the life sentence meted out to two pirates who were on board when four American cruising sailors were shot to death in February this year will begin to make Somalis think twice before being lured into the lucrative world of piracy on the high seas... and spare a thought for the nine other cruising sailors still in captivity in Somalia waiting for ransoms which may never come, including three Danish teenagers. It's not for nothing that even the fast-paced racing yachts of the Volvo World Race have decided not to sail the danger zone of the Indian Ocean, opting for some secretive transport methods and routes.
