The winner, Sydney! Industry united in skills, Aqualuma top exporter | | Friday Sydney International Boat Show 2011 Jeni Bone | 'Best Sydney Show for ages!' So say plenty of exhibitors, both in the halls and on the marina, with nearly unanimous reports of brisk trade, loads of quality leads and a real appreciation of the brilliant Sydney sunshine.
Visitors from overseas and interstate were gobsmacked at the spectacle - the scope of the show, enthusiasm of visitors and exhibitors, and again, the perfect boat show weather. For some, like Giuseppe Zecchin visiting from Ferretti Group, Italy, and Steve Heese, President of Chris Craft, the Sydney Show rates among their favourites, and deserves its ranking in the world's Top 10.
According to event marketing manager, Domenic Genua while numbers did not quite reach the 70,000 target over the five days, 'exhibitors are really pleased with what they call quality over quantity'.
'Our focus is on creating the framework and the reason for people - existing boaties and people new to boating - to come to the boat show. It's up to exhibitors to come with a great offer and suitable product to convert those visitors to quality sales.'
The media spend on this year's show, around $1m, was 'well worth it', says Genua. 'Our media blitz was sensational There's no doubt that people all over NSW, as well as high numbers from interstate and international, knew that the boat show was on and what was on offer. We were 6% down in overall visitor numbers, but heard back from exhibitors that the quality was there - the committed boaties. In most cases, exhibitors have achieved and surpassed their targets.'
Pre-research, Genua says his 'gut feel' is that the show attracted the committed boaters. 'The borderline boaties and non-boaties may not have come in numbers. That's our aim for next year, absolutely.'
Next on the domestic calendar is Brisbane, August 25-28, and in the region, Auckland, 15-18 September - this year a mega-show encompassing the Rugby World Cup 2011. Everybody at the Sydney boat show who came in contact with the ebullient NZ Marine team would agree, this is one to attend! There will be a long convoy of Aussies heading to Auckland for this year's event if the passion passed on by its industry proponents was anything to go by!
