Sail-World New Zealand: 31st July 2011

Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 31st July 2011

The 2011 OK Worlds have concluded in Largs with New Zealand's Greg Wilcox finish fourth overall and Alistair Deaves eighth overall. Interestingly a NZ designed Icebreaker hull won every race, along with NZ made C-Spars.

In Hayling Island, England, the Flying Fifteen Worlds have concluded. The best placed New Zealand crew placed 22nd which is a bit of a drop back from leading after the opening day. We have reports on the event and the other New Zealand placings in this edition of Sail-World.

In San Francisco, the Laser 4.7 Worlds are well under way. The first New Zealand sailor is lying in 12th overall - we have the official reports and results in this newsletter along with reports from Rob Burn, as the New Zealanders come to grips with the vagaries of San Francisco.

In Cascais, Portugal the preparations continue for the first event in the America's Cup World Series. It would seem that so far all eight teams are on track to make the event. We have some reports and images from the build up.

The first video has been released of a weekly series, again part of the build up for the 34th America's Cup. Don't miss seeing this 24 minute clip. Details of the TV coverage for the ACWS have not yet been announced, however TVNZ are listed as being a broadcaster. The event, we are assurred will be carried live on the internet.

After the loss of life in the Chicago - Mackinac race earlier this month, the event organisers have asked the US national body, US Sailing, to conduct and independent study of what happened in this tragedy. In turn US Sailing have appointed a very well qualified group to undertake this exercise. We have details of the appointments in this newsletter.

Laser 4.7 Worlds Day 2: Current frustrations in San Francisco

Rob Burn reports from the second day's racing in the Laser 4.7 Worlds in San Francisco: Keith, Trent, Taylor and Liam were all in the first flight, leaving Ryan all alone in the 2nd. Early start 11.am today, grey skies and the famous 'Finger of Fog' still hanging over the Golden Gate Bridge and the race area but lighter winds supposedly, leaving the girls to start at 3pm.... America's Cup: New TV graphics will be a sporting first

While the girls start their second race, a gun at the club goes off indicating it's time for the 112 boys to get their boats from the lawn, down the drive, to the ramp, and off the dock before the girls come in. The boys' yellow and blue fleets started on time at 1400 today; after a recall, the races started under black flag.... [more]

Finn Silver Cup - Arkadiy Kistanov maintains lead to win

Leading from the first race to the end, Arkadiy Kistanov (RUS) kept his head on the final day of the Finn Silver Cup in Moscow to win the Junior World Championship after three more races were sailed. Milosz Wojewski (POL) had a great last day to climb to second overall, while team mate Artur Ponieczynski (POL) dropped one place to take third overall.... [more]

PWA Fuerteventura World Cup day eight set off with 40 knots of wind hammering Sotavento beach. Full throttle slalom between the marks, dangerous gybes, explosive crashes and insane aerials, the third day of racing had it all. The spectators on the beach were treated to an exciting show and mind-blowing display of slalom talent as the world's finest racers did battle in the crazy conditions.... [more]

The 420 Open and Ladies European Championships resulted in a nervous morning for many as they tried to stay calm, not knowing if races would or would not happen as the wind repeated its disappearing act from Thursday. D-One Gold Cup: Tom Slingsby capsizes and goes on to win + Videos

The second day's racing on the 2011 D-One Gold Cup in Fraglia Vela Riva del Garda produced yet another thrilling duel between Australian Tom Slingsby and Great Britain's Nick Thompson. 'Ora', the local southerly breeze, started at 16 knots and dropped to 12 in the second race. Slingsby scored an incredible come-from-behind win in the first race... [more]
