The latest sailing news from the UK and beyond ...

Welcome to this week's edition of our UK newsletter.

Last week a thunderstorm, which dumped winds of more than 100 knots onto the Chicago-Mackinac fleet on the U.S.'s Lake Michigan provided notice to sailors and event organisers world wide that Mother Nature is in charge.

The Sail-World team was on location and will bring you more news as it unfolds.

A week for World Championships.

The 470 Junior World Championships are underway in Medemblik, Holland. Phil Sparks and David Kohler have the overall lead in the Mens championship after discarding a BFD.

At the Dart 18 World Championships at the time of writing this editorial, two British teams were fighting for top spot - Dan Norman and Melanie Rogers are leading on countback from Alan and Fiona Kernick.

Largs Scotland is currently playing host to the International OK Dinghy World Championships while, quite some distance away, Team GBR are in fine form at the RS Feva Worlds in Bruinisse, Netherlands.

Weymouth and Portland International Regatta - Competitive Laser fleet
International Sailing Federation,
Over 100 Laser and Laser Radial sailors will make the trip to Weymouth and Portland for the Olympic Test Event, as the sailors' countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition. F4 World Powerboat Championship - Curtis reclaims Champions title

F4 World Powerboat Championship - Twenty seven year old powerboat racer Scott Curtis from Norwich has been crowned the 2011 F4 World Champion for the second time. Curtis, from the Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Motor Boat Club, fought off strong competition from competitors from four different nations in the fifth and final round of the F4 World Championship to reclaim the Champions title.... RS600 Gul Grand Prix - The breezy forecast did not disappoint with a strong north-westerly F5 and even gusting up to F6 at times. This along with the large breaking waves seemed to put everyone off launching down the steep stony beach, and after seeing the safety boat swamped in the breakers many were unsure about launching.... RS Feva World Championship - Only two races were required for a full qualification series. Approx 10kts hit the deck with a 30 degree shift predicted at some point. The shift happened during the final race which was abandoned due to fleet inversion tendencies. That was when the magic happened.... [more]

Southern Spars take top three overall in the Region of Sardinia Trophy

Volvo Ocean Race Atlantic qualifier begins for Team Telefónica

Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 entrant Team Telefónica have now set out on their 2,000 mile Atlantic qualifier that is a requirement of the VOR rules. Iker Martínez and his crew departed their base in Lanzarote to begin the journey. It was a colourful spectacle where the top contenders all vied back and forth for a place on the podium. The America's Cup organisers have announced that Venezia Challenge has defaulted on the requirements to be a competitor in both the America's Cup World Series and the 34th America's Cup.
