Italy's Venezia Challenge Out of AC 34 Game—Sailing News from the U.S.
 | | Torvar Mirsky |
The biggest development over the weekend in America's Cup racing circles is that Italy's Venezia Challenge has defaulted on the requirements needed to take part in the America's Cup World Series and the 34th America's Cup. As a result, the team, which was slated to feature top match-racing skipper Torvar Mirsky as helmsman, will not be eligible to participate in either event series. 'Following discussions and attempts to resolve in a timely way, there was an agreement to meet certain obligations by this weekend and the deadline passed,' said Iain Murray, the America's Cup Regatta Director and Chief Executive of America's Cup Management Limited. 'Venezia Challenge failed to fulfill its commitments to remain eligible to continue in the 34th America's Cup,' said Tom Ehman, Vice Commodore of the Golden Gate Yacht Club.

Also in Cup-racing circles, Emirates Team New Zealand took a day out of their normal training regime to play a game of 'touch' rugby. The team's two main factions—the Volvo Ocean Race lads clad in red versus the Extreme 40 team in black—squared off just before each team prepares to leave their shared training base for their respective races. While the game was purported to be touch only, this hardly stood for long, given that bragging rights and honor were at stake.
Also, be sure to check out reports from the Sardinia Cup, where Audi Sailing Team Powered by All4One edged out a talented line-up of TP52s and Iberdrola Team cleaned up in the Soto 40 class. This event marks the third of five events on the Audi MedCup Circuit. Check out the complete reports, in this issue, and mark your calendars for when Eurosport will be broadcasting the action.
May the four winds blow you safely home,
