 Happy Canada Day!
The chase is on across the Atlantic in the 2011 Transatlantic Race; the cruising division started earlier this week on the 26th, followed by the racers on the 29th who will be joined by the full on racing machines on July 3rd. Races across the Atlantic have been held since sailing vessels began the regular delivery route between New York and the UK; this year, the yachts on the start line are as varied as one can expect: yachts ranging from a modern Archambault 40 to a classic pre-World War II German Navy 86' training vessel form the Cruiser division; the Racing division includes two Class 40 yachts, Dragon and Concise 2 and one of the most interesting battle between the Open class entries, Phaedo a luxurious Gunboat catamaran and the 289' Maltese Falcon. The showdown to watch will be between the 100' maxis Rambler 100 and ICAP Leopard; they both take their start on Sunday with their only goal being an Atlantic crossing record.
C&C yacht owners are gathering at the National Yacht Club this week-end for the 30th Annual C&C Owners Regatta & Rendezvous. Over 40 participants are expected, representing the full gamut of C&C designs and builds, from the Viking 22 to the contemporary C&C 115. The National Yacht Club promises great entertainment for owners and crew with a 1930's 'Dirty Thirties' party theme.
On the world scene, Volvo Ocean Race teams are getting organized for the next event, while the 2011-12 Clipper Round the World Race welcomes new entries and the America's Cup is trialing Race Committee and Umpires equipment and procedures. In Boston, the Extreme 40 teams are making their USA debut in rather challenging conditions at the Fan Pier; Artemis Racing, helmed by Terry Hutchinson is leading the way. The 40' high performance catamarans are being raced by many America's Cup teams to increase their multi-hull experience.
If you happen to travel in Ontario's Prince-Edward County, don't forget to drop by the History of Yachting Exhibition at the Archives and Collections Society in Picton. The exhibits are on display until August 4th.
