Welcome to Sail-World Canada
Canadian sailors performing on the international scene!
All the boats are safely at the dock at the St. George's Dinghy and Sports Club in Bermuda following completion of the single-handed Leg 1 of the Bermuda 1-2. Congratulations to Canadians Diane Reid and Philippe Laville for completing the leg in their Mini 6.5. The start of double-handed return race to Newport is set for Thursday, June 16th. http://www.bermuda1-2.org/
The Canadian Sailing Team is finally enjoying better racing conditions at the 2012 Olympics sailing venue in Weymouth, UK and are showing good results at the Skandia Sail for Gold international event. Hudson Yacht Club hosted the 2011 CYA Womens National Keelboat Championship last week-end, find the results in the news story.
Nova Scotia sailors Mike Evans and Matt Stokes have shown the world what Canadian sailors can achieve leading their team on Diva, a Concordia Taylor 47 to a series of bullets on both inshore and offshore races at the 2011 Korea Cup International Yacht Race. Mike and Scott represented Canada as guest of the Korean Sailing Federation for this event. Congratulations of your achievement!
Velux is back as the title sponsor for the 2014 edition of the Velux 5 Oceans race; Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, President of Clipper Ventures the event organizers confirmed earlier this week that the next edition will include the SolOceans One Design Class racing alongside the successful Eco 60 Class. Solo skippers will race around the world on a level playing field in identical 52-foot yachts. Back home, Velux Canada hosted a lunch yesterday in Oakville, On. to celebrate Canadian solo skipper Derek Hatfield's achievement in the 2010-11 version of the race.
Racers in the annual Lake Ontario Susan Hood Trophy Race had to deal with no wind a few hours after the Friday start where many drifted in unison under the lights of the Hamilton steel plants before getting hit by a sever storm some hours later while on the way to the mouth of the Niagara River on the south shore of the lake. Many reported sustained wind velocities over 30 knots and torrential downpours, which caused some retirements. Keith Bechard's ZOOM from RCYC, took line honors finishing shortly after 10:00am on Saturday morning, the last yacht came in safely after 9:00pm that evening.
Fair winds!
