Have you ever wondered which is worth more - an Olympic Gold Medal or a World Championship title? The Olympics get the visibility, but the Worlds provide much more competition in terms of numbers. Take the Finn class, for example. The top Finn sailors in the world are battling it out at Weymouth right now, including Ben Ainslie, Ed Wright and Giles Scott - all GBR - but regardless of how damn good any of them are, and even if they finish 1, 2, 3 in this regatta, only one of them is going to be representing GBR in the next Olympics. Because there's only one 'slot' per country per class. It's the same for all the classes. And that means that many of the sailors competing in the Olympics are not necessarily the best of the best - they are just the best that the syatem let through. So - same question again: which is worth more, an Olympic Gold Medal or a World Championship title? Beats me.
