Down to the Wire—Sailing News from the U.S. and Beyond

For fans of multihull racing, these are heady days. The much anticipated AC72s, which will be used to contest the 34th America's Cup, will be coming online soon, and the already-active AC45s—the new One Design class of hard wingsail-powered catamarans—will be used to contest Cup pre-events, starting this summer. In the meantime, the hot Extreme 40 circuit offers super-fast racing action in a class that many Cup teams are using to pre-flight their AC45 programs.

Take the Extreme Sailing Series Act 3, which just wrapped up in Istanbul. There, three boats locked horns entering the final double-points race, bringing the outcome down to the wire. Dean Barker's Emirates Team New Zealand trailed Terry Hutchinson's Artemis Racing—the newly named Challenger of Record for AC45—while Pierre Pennec's team was also in the mix. But, ultimately, 'We knew around the last lap that we had one opportunity and we needed to pass one boat to win the regatta and we passed one boat,' said an elated Hutchinson. 'I jumped up to the first spreader when I heard that we had won!' Check out the full report, as well as a day-five sizzle reel, inside.

Meanwhile, in Medemblik, Holand, the Delta Lloyd Regatta 2011 wrapped up this past weekend. Both the Dutch and the Australians have each sailed away with six medals, high-water records for this event. British Finn sailor Ed Wright, who's a strong contender for the 2012 Finn berth in Weymouth, nabbed a Gold. 'It was exciting to go out there this morning,' he said. 'I saw my friends win the 49ers and it was inspiring! I love these conditions and I was quite confident but you never know with the medal race.' In the Windy City, Don Wilson, founder of the Chicago Match Racing Center (CMRC), and crew have won the CMRC's Spring Invitational regatta, an ISAF Grade 3 season opener.
