Sail-World New Zealand: 21 May 2011
 | | Marine Business World Pavilion - Sanctuary Cove Boat Show Christina Huntingdon | Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 21 May 2011
Save for the Audi MedCup being sailed in Cascais, Portugal, the racing scene internationally and domestically is relatively quiet at present as both hemispheres transition between summer and winter.
We have the first three day's coverage of the TP52's in Cascais, with plenty of images. The AudiMed Cup was won but Emirates Team NZ for the past two years, however with their focus on the Volvo Ocean Race and America's Cup they are not contesting the regatta this year and the search is on for a new champion.
One of the key point's of interest is the performance of the only owner/driver in the event, which has become dominated by professionals. Niklas Zennstrom, Swedish born, English resident, and perhaps better known for his exploits with the development of Skype, and subsequent sale, than for sailing, is helming his new boat in this year's circuit. Zennstrom's opening performances were indifferent, however he has just bounced back to win the 1.5pts scoring coastal race - and has maybe given others of his ilk some food for thought.
Stuart Alexander provides a brief profile of Niklas Zennstrom in this edition.

The AC45's have vacated the Waitemata Harbour, save for Emirates Team NZ.
Top international photographer, Gilles Martin-Raget has compiled a still image picture show, posted on YouTube which is stunning for both it presentation and number of outstanding images. It's a must see, and something you can view more than once - maybe with your finger on the pause button on the second time around. There's a lot to take in - with a lot of shots and scenes that have never been seen previously.
In the local news in this edition we have a report on the Farr 727 Nationals, with some good photography from the multi-tasking Race Officer.

Neil Deverell has updated the story on the Vudu 12ft catamaran aimed at Optimist sailors and upward, with several videos of the catamaran being sailed in a light to moderate breeze, including a pitchpole. It's a great performer.
We also have news of an International invitation regatta to be sailed ahead of the 2012 Optimist Worlds, to be staged at Napier, for those not fortunate to make the New Zealand team, this is a great opportunity to pitch up against some of the top international sailors as they build up for the World Championships.

From Curacao, in the Caribbean, Laurence Carey, a NZ youth sailor reports from the IFCA Slalom World Championships. He placed a creditable seventh place in his first international event.
