Like the ad used to say - "It's good to talk". After the Top of the Gulf closed on Tuesday (with a new champion, Team Premier from Dubai, story below) a handful of regatta organisers and other interested parties sat down for a talk about what is loosely referred to as the 'Asian Regatta Circuit', and where it is going. And particularly about improving inclusiveness and competitor numbers. It was a time to air some ideas, not to start writing rule books or forming committees.

As Asia attracts more and more attention from the western hemisphere (think VOR, Extreme 40s, WMRT, Clipper), it is only a matter of time before a racing yacht or two trickles in from Europe in much the same way we welcome the occasional visitor from Australia or New Zealand. And when that happens, it would be a good idea if the Asian regattas were all talking to each other. Now, they've started.



Top of the Gulf 2011 - 'must be accounted a success'

Once again it was a grey and soft beginning to the day, with the first starts going away in no more than 5 kts of southwesterly breeze. The RO signalled windward-leeward courses for all classes, with the firm intention of completing two races for all divisions (except the Cruising class) and maybe three for the Platu fleet contesting the Coronation Cup.... Top of the Gulf 2011 – what a difference a day makes

It was back to cliché conditions today – after a soft start to proceedings, the Race Officer was able to send all divisions away in light breeze that then built to a useful 12+ kts and stayed that way. A single ‘islands' race for the Cruising division, and a windward-leeward followed by an islands course for everyone else.... [more]

2016 Olympics: Both Keelboats chopped by ISAF Events Committee
