It was a sharp reminder this week that if you leave your boat when in distress Australian marine rescuers may be powerless to take part in the rescue of the empty boat. Echoing the recent Queensland floods situation where many boats were lost for the same reason, read the story of how Dr Chris Murcutt lost his sinking boat on rocks because some fishermen rescued the crew.
Over in Namibia, Sailrocket 2 (pictured left), sailed by determined Australian sailor Paul Larson, is preparing for another attempt on the outright world speed sailing record; up on the Gold Coast it's full steam ahead for the next Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, and Jeni Bone puts paid to the evil scuttlebutt that's been circulating about the demise of Australia's largest boat show.
It's not only in Australia that sailors get passionate about how the sport is dealt with by authorities. There's an outcry in Britain about the proposed changes to the way the Coastguard operates and this week the Westerly Owners Association joins the fray.
It seems as though powerboat owners are finally seeing the light, perhaps pushed along by the rising cost of fuel, hopefully by a growing sense of the importance of our environment. A recent study has shown that sailing boat sales have almost doubled in the last year. With low prices overseas, lots of Australians are importing boats recently, and Yachting Australia has come out with some warnings about checking the Australian requirements before doing the deal.
There are some great practical articles too. There's a cautionary article about boatyards and the ins and outs of their liability while they have charge of your boat. Boat US has an excellent free boating simulator just out which you can download free. It's their gift to the sailing world - you don't have to be a member and you don't have to live in the USA! Then there are two new products featured: a natty extension arm for your wheel for comfortable cruising and a new wind meter with a wind vane.
