 Derek Hatfield tied in second place in Velux 5 Oceans
Canadian Velux 5 Oceans skipper, Derek Hatfield, will start the next leg tied on points with Polish skipper Gutek, following his second place finish in Sprint 4; Derek arrived in Charleston, SC just 15 hours behind leg winner Brad Van Liew. A particularly sweet victory for Brad as he sailed into his hometown to a large welcoming crowd cheering on his fourth victory in the race. Chris Stanmore-Major is is expected in Charleston sometime today, while Gutek will rejoin ocean sprint four leaving Fortaleza, Brazil bound for Charleston. The start of the final sprint across the Atlantic is scheduled for May 14th.
Only three yachts remain on the Barcelona World Race course, Hugo Boss and, trailing them by a hundred miles, Forum Maritim Catala will both be in Barcelona to celebrate by the week-end; quite an achievement for Hugo Boss considering the last minute skipper change when Wouter Verbraak stepped in for Alex Thompson. Further back, We Are Water, have just crossed the equator and are finally in the northern hemisphere on the home stretch.
Charleston Race Week, one of the most popular Spring events on the US eastern seaboard, saw a few Canadian teams with winning performances. Because of its reasonable distance, Charleston is a great destination for trailerable sports boats; Brad Boston and Lee Shuckerow on Jackpot, from the Sarnia Yacht Club, took first place in the Viper 640 division, while Jim Pearson, also from SYC, was the Ultimate 20 winner on Slippery. Charleston Race Week delivered a mixed bag of racing conditions this year with some races being called off because of inclement weather, a very unusual situation following an excellent track record for perfect racing conditions.
